Yarn Information~
Darling Buds makes baby clothes and shawls out of three types of yarn.
Most of what you see on this site is hand knitted in pure
Cashmere
which is spun from the very soft hair combed from the underbelly of a goat. The only hair which is suitable for spinning comes from goats that live at extreme altitude and consequently virtually the entire world production of cashmere comes from herds living on the Mongolian plateau, producing an annual average total of only 3,000 tonnes, which explains why it is so expensive! Darling Buds' cashmere is spun and dyed in Scotland, the traditional centre of cashmere yarn production and, until recently, the largest.
Cashmere is an extraordinary material, light, ultra warm and exquisitely soft, the ultimate in luxurious comfort for a baby. Individual cashmere threads are spun very fine and Darling Buds uses two weights of yarn; 2-ply for the most delicate shawls and 6-ply for thicker shawls and clothes.
Some of the garments are knitted in 100% British
Pure New Wool
spun in Yorkshire from the fleeces of Blue Faced Leicester Sheep into double knitting yarn. This breed of sheep is native to the British Isles and noted for the softness of the wool produced from its fleece.
Occasionally a
Cashmere / Cotton
mix is used for lighter garments, more suitable for warmer weather. This is a 32% cashmere 68% cotton mix, spun and dyed in Scotland.
